The race format for Pro Open competitors in the Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals has been altered, and will now consist of two back-to-back 10-lap races (approximately 20 minutes in length) scheduled twice during race day.
The change, a departure from the four back-to-back moto structure used at round one in Broadford, will come into effect at round two in Appin (NSW) this Sunday. It now brings Pro Open into line with the Pro Lites and Under 19 classes, which already adopt the ‘two block’ system.
In Broadford (Vic), 25 per cent of the riders were unable to grid up for the final moto – most of them privateers.
Although conditions were onerous -- a rain storm swept over the circuit just prior to the gates dropping -- the championship promoter simply didn't want to hedge its bets going forward.
“Without the privateers we don't have a race meeting and these guys are the heartbeat of the sport,” said Kevin Williams from Williams Event Management.” In some cases it was simple things like trying to ride three motos with bent bars and not having the ability or time to change them.”
Practice and qualifying for the Appin round will commence at 8:30am this Sunday, with the official opening ceremonies taking place at approximately 10:30am.
Kawasaki’s Billy Mackenzie currently leads the Pro Open class ahead of Suzuki duo Cody Cooper (who just wrapped up the equivalent title in New Zealand), and Lawson Bopping.
