According to a report in the Florida-based Sun Sentinel newspaper, researchers have found that in 60 per cent of collisions between cars and bikes, the drivers are at fault.
The paper cites a Florida Department of Transportation study, where 10 years of Florida motorcycle crashes were analysed.
“There's a bias by people driving. They don't expect to see motorcycles,” said Chanyoung Lee, a senior researcher at the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research, which was commissioned to produce the study.
The study also found that 34 per cent of motorcycle crashes involved one vehicle, and in severe and fatal motorcycle crashes, 50 per cent of those accidents involved just the motorcycle and no other vehicle.
But in severe and fatal motorcycle crashes involving multiple vehicles, greater blame falls on cars. And most motorcycle crashes involve other vehicles.
