Flashy 2022 BMW M 1000 RR 50 Years M hints at expanded M range

The new anniversary model celebrates 50 years of the iconic M brand, but could an M 1300 GS be on the horizon?

BMW has unveiled a striking new anniversary edition of the M 1000 RR, with the new model hinting at an expanded M motorcycle range that could include the rumoured M 1300 GS adventure bike.

The 2022 BMW M 1000 RR 50 Years M anniversary model features a special San Paulo Yellow paint scheme and a unique BMW 50 Years M badge, as well as a host of exclusive standard equipment.

Available to order only between May 21 and November 30, 2022, the new model indicates a commitment to the M brand from the motorcycle division.

The iconic M designation has been used in the car division since 1972, when BMW decided to unite its motorsport and high-performance operations under one banner, but the original M 1000 RR released in 2020 was the first dedicated M motorcycle.

Previously, BMW had offered special M parts packages, and had also used the signature red, violet, blue and white colour scheme for various models. Most notably, the M colour scheme was used in the Dakar Rally and also the Isle of Man TT.

While BMW is yet to reveal any specific plans, the release of another M-branded motorcycle indicates that an expanded M range could be on the horizon.

Back in 2020, BMW Motorrad boss Markus Schramm told bikesales that the company had plans for further M models. “We didn’t introduce M for just one model,” he said. “We have a lot more powerful ideas in this area.”

Schramm refused to elaborate on future models at the time, but he did rule out the cruiser, touring, and urban mobility segments as getting the M treatment. Importantly, Schramm did not put a line through the adventure category.

The M 1000 RR is likely the first of an expanded M range

The concept of an M 1300 GS has been circulating since 2020, with a 1300cc platform the natural successor to the current R 1250 GS platform. Some online outlets have posted apparent spy shots of a prototype version, while some sleuths also claim to have found information proving that BMW has registered the R 1300 GS, M 1300 GS and R 1400 GS designations.

A potential M 1300 GS could be a road-focused machine, similar in concept to the Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak edition, but a Dakar-inspired, dirt-focused model isn’t outside the realms of possibility.
