First TT winner’s hip flask sold for $46K!

Rem Fowler’s hip flask forms part of record-breaking Bonhams auction

The hip flask awarded to the winner of the first-ever motorcycle race at the 1907 Isle of Man TT has been sold at auction for over $45,000. Largely considered to be one of the event’s most significant pieces of memorabilia, Rem Fowler’s hip flask fetched £25,000 ($46,171) during a recent Bonhams auction held over 13-14 October.

The two-day event surpassed the firm’s previous total earnings for a motorcycle auction when 92 per cent of the offered lot was sold for a record £3,479,800 ($6,426,270). The lot which attracted the highest bid was a dismantled 981cc 1925 Brough Superior SS100 Sand Racer Project which sold for £264,500 ($488,186), which was more than doubled its pre-event estimate.

Other notable items included an as-new 1989 Honda RC30 which sold for £47,150 ($87,026), as well as the Suter MMX1 machine Colin Edwards rode to 20th position in the 2012 MotoGP World Championship, which went for £46,000 ($84,901).
