Finnish enduro star passes away

Five-time world champion Mike Ahola has tragically lost his life after a training incident in Spain – and just weeks after he announced his retirement from the sport

The motorcycle racing community is mourning the passing of Mike Ahola, who recently retired after winning his fifth consecutive Enduro World Championship.

Ahola, 37, died in a Barcelona hospital on January 16, just a few days after crashing while out riding with some friends.

Ahola made his debut in the world enduro title on a Husqvarna in 1993, and became a regular title contender after joining the TM factory team in 1997.

He was second in various world enduro classes seven times between 1999 and 2006 before breaking the drought in 2007, this time on a Honda.

From there, he’s been an irresistible, wrapping up his fifth world title in 2011 before announcing he was calling it quits on January 1, 2012.

Ahola also won 10 International Six-Day Enduro titles riding for Finland.

"Mika was a very talented and charismatic rider. On behalf of the FIM, I extend my deepest condolences to Mika's family, friends and team for this tragic loss." says FIM President Vito Ippolito.

RIP Mike Ahola.
