The FIM has adopted a new noise limit for three of its world championship disciplines in 2010: motocross, enduro and track racing.
For motocross and track racing, the maximum noise level admitted at a distance of 100m will be of 81 dB/A, and for enduro it will be 78 dB/A. Depending on the discipline, that amounts to an average reduction of between 3-6 dB/A compared to the current situation.
A new sound level method called "2 metre max" has also been adopted, which positions the sound meter at the rear of the motorcycle, 2m and an angle of 45 degrees from the silencer. The engine is tested at maximum rpm.
Vito Ippolito, FIM President said: "For the past 15 years, FIM has become a leading sporting federation, actively involved in the study and application of solutions to fight against environmental nuisance. The rules of the new sound test method for competition, represents a significant progress. I'm really pleased with the collaboration with our partners to achieve this agreement."
Locally, Motorcycling Australia's noise emission rules are much more relaxed, and must not exceed 96 dB/A for two-strokes and 94 dB/A for four-strokes, or another limit in the table below:
To put that into perspective, a Jimmy Barnes concert and irate mother-in-law will set you back around 150 dB/A, a jackhammer around 130 dB/A, and a dishwasher around 60 dB/A.
