If you glance through the Screamin Eagle section of 2018 Harley-Davidson genuine motor parts and accessory catalogue, you’ll quickly notice the absence of the Screamin’ Eagle Pro Super Tuner.
On page 568 the Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner is listed, however it’s a much tamer version of the Pro Super Tuner.
Which begs one to ask: why?
The story unfolded in 2016 when Harley-Davidson (USA) was accused by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of selling 340,000 engine tuners that, once installed, “caused motorcycles to emit higher amounts of certain air pollutants than what the company certified to EPA”.
As part of the settlement with the EPA, announced on August 18, 2016, Harley-Davidson paid a $12 million civil penalty, and pledged $3 million on a project to mitigate air pollution by replacing conventional woodstoves with cleaner-burning stoves in local communities.
However, it wasn’t an admission of guilt by the motorcycle behemoth.
“This settlement is not an admission of liability but instead represents a good faith compromise with the EPA on areas of law we interpret differently, particularly EPA’s assertion that it is illegal for anyone to modify a certified vehicle even if it will be used solely for off-road/closed-course competition,” said Ed Moreland, Harley-Davidson’s government affairs director.
Under the settlement arrangement, Harley-Davidson will stop selling the aftermarket devices in the United States, and this action has consequently flowed on to the Australian market.
Rollies on up
Brisbane-based Rollies Speed Shop, a long-time Harley-Davidson specialist, has a solution for those wanting a worthy alternative – the Maximus EFI Diagnostic tuner from
Michigan-based company TechnoResearch.
The Maximus has an extensive feature set, suitable for professional tuners and bike shops alike – while still remaining simple to use.
The Maximus is suitable for all Harley-Davidson models built from 2001 to 2018, and Maximus allows for backing-up and restoring original maps and performing routine diagnostics.
TechnoResearch claims the Maximus:
The Maximus works in concert with TechnoResearch’s Direct Link and Centurion Super Pro Plus, and requires no extra wires.
On the spot guidance
TechnoResearch founder Sandro Moyse recently travelled to Rollies Speed Shop to provide training to new Maximus users and explain the features and benefits of the product.
“Direct Link tuning keys provide the most extensive, professional, easy-to-use flash tuning capabilities available,” Sandro explained.
“They can be used with any TechnoResearch VCM-TR3 (Centurion Pro, Pro Plus or Tune Builder) and they even include an auto mapping feature which greatly reduces the user's need to do cell-by-cell tuning calculations. You can modify the fuel and spark tables (front and rear cylinders), air/fuel ratio, warm-up fuel, cranking fuel, closed loop, acceleration and deceleration, rev limiter, knock control – the list goes on.”
“The Centurion Super Pro Plus is the industry's only complete professional diagnostic tool system designed for independent professional repair facilities.” Sandro continued.
“It communicates with all 1997-2017 Harley-Davidsons, 2008-2017 Victory models, 2003-2017 Indians, and all Buell models using the proprietary VCM-TR3 communication module. It can re-flash a blank ECU, program VIN, BCM, key fobs and so much more.”
