The 2016 MX Nationals MX1 champion was crowned this in Coolum (Qld) afternoon, with CDR Yamaha’s Dean Ferris erasing a final round deficit to defeat defending champion Kirk Gibbs (KTM) by just 6pts.
“I’m so stoked to have won the championship," said Ferris. "After round five I knew it was going to be tough, but the whole team believed in me, and I believed in myself.
“I’ve had a lot of speed on the track this year and I just needed to work out how to be consistent like Kirk Gibbs, and that’s what I did. I wasn’t outside the top two after Wanneroo.”
“This is actually the first championship I’ve ever won. I’m 26, and honestly I thought I was going to do this eight years ago but I didn’t. I’ve had some really good results over the years but this is the first title so I’m absolutely ecstatic.”
Ferris shared final round honours with Todd Waters (Suzuki), which was enough for him to wipe out Gibbs' 3pt lead after the penultimate round and then add another six on top to become the new MX1 class boss cocky.
Waters finished third in the championship from Kade Mosig (Kawasaki, 541) and Honda's Dylan Long.
In the other classes, Jed Beaton (Yamaha) was the MX2 winner, Mitchell Evans (Yamaha) did the business in MXD, and Jessica Moore (KTM) won the women's title.
