CDR Yamaha’s Dean Ferris has kept his MX1 championship hopes alive in the 2016 MX Nationals after winning the penultimate round in Toowoomba, Qld on August 21.
Ferris scored 2-1 results in the two motos to edge out American Kawasaki import Kyle Peters (1-3) by 2pts, followed by defending champion Kirk Gibbs (KTM, 3-2), Todd Waters (Suzuki, 4-4) and Honda's Dylan Long (6-5).
With one round remaining, in Coolum, Qld on August 28, Gibbs (602pts) and Ferris (596) are set to battle it out to the wire, with Waters (578)_ remaining a mathematical chance if he two leaders implode.
“It’s been a good day," said Ferris. "I messed up qualifying a bit which I don’t often do, but I made up some points and I’m in striking distance of this championship.
“It’s good that Kyle Peters is here, because obviously it puts some of those points between myself and Kirk Gibbs. We know he’s here, so I’ve just got to be the best that I can be."
In MX2, Nathan Crawford (Husqvarna) heads into the final round on 574pts, with Jed Beaton (Yamaha, 563) and Caleb Ward (KTM, 555) breathing down his neck.
