
Stephen Payne has been appointed interim chief executive of peak industry body, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.
Australia’s major motorcycle and ATV importers are members of the FCAI, including Kawasaki, Honda, Kymco, Yamaha, BRP Australia, Suzuki, Harley-Davidson, BMW Motorrad, John Sample Group, NF Importers and Peter Stevens Importers. The Australian Scooter Federation, an almalgam of major scooter importers, is also a member.
Former FCAI CEO Andrew McKellar has resigned to join the Australian Automobile Association.
Mr Payne has strong automotive experience. He formerly headed the division of the Federal Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research responsible for providing advice to the government on automotive policy and administering government programs for the industry.
He was closely involved in the conduct of the Bracks review of the motor industry and the development and implementation of government policies.
Mr Payne’s 30-year career with the Australian Public Service included senior roles in the Department of Resources and Energy and as a ministerial adviser.
He retired from the public service last December and has accepted the FCAI role until the process to find a permanent appointment has been completed.
