Fatal crash at Phillip Island

A Queensland teenager has tragically lost his life during the opening round of the 2012 Australian Superstock 600 Championship, casting a pall over Phillip Island

Queenslander Oscar McIntyre was fatally injured in an incident which occurred during the opening round of the 2012 Australian Superstock 600 Championship at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit this afternoon.

McIntyre, 17, was immediately tended to by medical personnel but sustained fatal injuries in the incident, which also involved two other riders. It occurred on lap two of the scheduled seven-lap race between turns two and three at approximately 2.00pm AEDT.

The other riders involved were Luke Burgess and Michael Lockhart. Burgess has now been released from the circuit’s medical centre and Burgess remains under observation with non-life threatening injuries.

The trio were all competing in the opening superstock 600 race this weekend, one of the events on the support card for the opening round of the 2012 Superbike World Championship.
