Born in Mooroopna (Victoria), Findlay began his European GP career in the very late 1950s and scored his first GP points on a Norton in 1961. He raced in 250, 350, 500 and 750 classes, with perhaps his most memorable season being 1968 when he came second in the 500 championship behind Giacomo Agostini. He won three 500 grands prix over his career, giving Suzuki its first win in the class in 1971 - this was also a first-time win for a two-stroke.
He became the subject of a movie, Continental Circus, which revealed the life of a privateer racer. Findlay is honoured by a statue in the main street of Mooroopna.
