The former Aprilia factory world superbikes of Max Biaggi and Eugene Laverty have been stolen from a workshop in outer Melbourne.
The thieves pinched the bikes from the recently opened Amsoil Synthetic Lubricant factory on Lonsdale Street in Dandenong on Monday night. The factory -- and the Biaggi bike -- is owned by well-known racing identity Ben Reid, who has assisted many young Australian motorcycle racers on the road to stardom over the last 20 years. Reid has only just returned to Australia after many years based in Europe.
Reid and the owner of the second bike are now offering a $20K reward for a person(s) who can assist with information for the recovery of the bikes.
“It’s just a disaster — I just want the bikes back,” Reid was quoted as saying in the Herald-Sun. “Sure it’s a big financial hit, but it’s more of the sentimental meaning for me.
“I’m really close with the Aprilia Racing Team and they are devastated they have been stolen as they put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into these bikes.”
Reid was planning to put a young Australian on one of the bikes at the 2015 world superbike round at Phillip Island.
"A young Australian rider now misses out on racing at Philip Island on a factory machine with factory support from the best team in the paddock. Incredible some people just don't care for others."
Biaggi won the 2012 world superbike title on the RSV4 Factory, before retiring from the sport.
