The 11th BMW Motorrad Days event took over the picturesque Bavarian village of Garmisch-Partenkirchen over July 6-8, with some 35,000 BMW fans enjoying a range of activities and entertainment taking place in and around the town over the three days.
Actually, this year's event in represented a slight break with tradiiton, as the festival kicked off with a 'warm-up' party on the Thursday evening in Munich. There the crowds enjoyed a beer or three and and some top live music, but unfortunately the stunt show to be hosted by world-renowned stunt maestro Chris Pfeiffer was cancelled due to rain. Still, the sun was shining when the BMW faithful rode into Garmisch-Partenkirchen the next day, where Pfeiffer proceeded to thrill the throng with an array of stunts on his F 800 R -- and even a massive K 1600 GT!
BMW World Superbike pilots Marco Melandri and Leon Haslam were there soaking up the atmosphere, along with retired BMW racer Troy Corser, and there was a heap of things to see and do in general. There were trade stalls to check out, apparel and accessories to browse and a smorgasbord of classic BMWs to admire in the Classic Korso display. And if Pfeiffer's tarmac-based antics weren't enough to get pulses racing, the freestlye motocross display certainly was -- it was the first time the BMW event had hosted an FMX display, and it went down a treat.
The new, 2013-spec F 700 GS and F 800 GS models were also unveiled at BMW Motorrad Days -- the first of the 2013 models to be seen by the public -- and over 2000 people took a test ride of a new BMW (or Husqvarna -- BMW has owned Husky since 2007) over the spectacular alpine roads that lie to the town's south.
The GS brigade got to test its skill at the purpose-built Enduro Park, while other major highlights included the parties in the massive beer tent on the Friday and Saturday nights, and the traditional Motorrad Corso, which saw tens of thousands of riders take part in a group ride through the region.
Rest assured, when summer swings around again in Europe next year, thousands of BMW fans from across Europe and indeed around the world will be thinking about pointing their bikes at Garmisch-Partenkirchen once more.
