Aussie motorcycle importer Urban Moto Imports has announced it recently took delivery of an example of Erik Buell Racing’s 1190RS, with the model to go on sale here shortly after it has been granted ADR (Australian Design Rules) compliance.
The exotic sports bike will only be offered here in up-spec Carbon form through Urban Moto Import’s Melbourne-based dealership, FX Powersports – although a national dealer network will be unveiled in the near future.
According to Urban Moto Import’s Managing Director, Joseph Elasmar, the 1190RS is a logical addition to its portfolio. “The 1190RS is a perfect fit among our high-end, niche motorcycles,” he said. “We’re very excited about bringing Erik Buell Racing to Australia – this 1190RS is the only example of the bike to be seen outside of the US,” he added.
Urban Moto Imports also imports and distributes Italian-made Benelli and Bimota motorcycles. While the bikes are currently offered through the FX Powersports showroom in Brunswick, in Melbourne’s inner northern suburbs, the business currently flies prospective buyers in from their nearest capital city to test the bike in which they’re interested, covering the travel costs. “It’s a method that to date has served us well, in fact we’ve sold around 50 bikes in this manner,” said Elasmar.
The 1190RS is about to undergo ADR compliance testing and Elasmar says he’s hopeful of offering the bike to Australian customers by the end of November, although he's already taking orders. “We’ll also have the 1190RS on our stand at the expo at this year’s Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, so people can come and have a closer look at it,” he said. “We are yet to lock in a confirmed price for the model, but in Carbon form and with any number of top-shelf components, it will be selling for around $55,000,” he added.
The 1190RS is currently the only model offered by Erik Buell Racing, which is owned by the founder of the now defunct Buell Motorcycles, Erik Buell. The sportsbike has already proven its abilities, a race version recently claiming a number of podium finishes in the hotly contested AMA Superbike Championship.
While still a relatively small concern operating out of a portion of the old Buell Motorcycles facility in Troy, Wisconsin, Erik Buell Racing recently received a major injection of foreign funding, and is set to ramp up both the size of its production facility and expand its range of models.
