Eli Tomac has won the 2020 AMA Supercross 450SX title, his first in the premier class. The Monster Energy Kawasaki pilot finished fifth in the series finale at Salt Lake City, but it was enough to fend off his last remaining title rival, and reigning champion, Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb.
Rockstar Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne took the round win ahead of teammate Jason Anderson, and another Husqvarna rider, Dean Wilson.
Webb finished eighth on the day to confirm second place in the championship, while Honda’s Ken Roczen finished seventh to see him finish third overall.
Tomac’s triumph came after having played bridesmaid on three previous occasions. The 27-year-old has finished second in the championship three times, with a third and fourth to add.
Australia’s Chad Reed finished an impressive tenth place in the final race of his career. That left him 16th in the championship, as he bows out as one of the most successful riders of all time. There has been some discussion about a potential farewell race in front of fans in 2021, though nothing has been confirmed.
In the 250SX class, it was Chase Sexton (Honda) winning the West title, while Dylan Ferrandis (Yamaha) won the East title. Australian brothers Jett and Hunter Lawrence (both Honda) finished the title race in tenth and 23rd in the West class respectively, but they both missed multiple rounds through injury.
Another Australian, Luke Clout (Honda), finished an impressive ninth in the West championship, with his countryman, Jay Wilson (Yamaha), in 19th. Sexton won the East/West Showdown race, with Jett Lawrence ending the race in fifth place.
The final seven rounds of the 2020 AMA Supercross series were held at Salt Lake City in an empty stadium, with the COVID-19 pandemic drastically altering the calendar. With races normally taking place weekly on Saturday nights, the final seven races were held in just 21 days.
Most riders will now look towards the 2020 Pro Motocross series, which is currently scheduled to kick off at Ironman Raceway in Indiana on July 18. In positive news, it has been confirmed that fans will be allowed to attend the race. Tomac and Ferrandis are the reigning 450 and 250 champions.
