The recent battle over the national introduction of front numberplates for motorcycles may have been won, but it appears the war may be far from over.
A Vic Roads staffer in Melbourne has confirmed the issue is far from dead.
In recent correspondence, Mr Geiorge Mavroyeni wrote: "The matter of front identification is still under consideration by all jurisdictions across Australia, but no proposal is with the Australian Transport Council for its consideration. The reintroduction of the previous metal plate style identifier is not being considered.
"In relation to the testing of an electronic device in some government vehicles, this is part of a TAC project assessing intelligent speed assist (ISA) devices.
"ISA is a type of in-vehicle telematics that uses GPS and/or other technologies to compare the location, heading and speed of a vehicle with an onboard speed zone map database containing the speed limits for the road network. ISA is being developed to assist motorists to comply with speed limits. It is not a vehicle identifier."
The assurance that ISA is not being considered as an identifier is being treated with a great deal of scepticism.
As long-time lobbyist Damien Codognotto (pictured) recently told Bikepoint, "If you believe that, you believe in Father Christmas."
