Vectrix, headquartered on Rhode Island in the USA, is releasing a 250 max-sized scooter, with a maximum claimed speed of 100km/h and 0 to 80km/h time of 6.8 seconds. The company says it has approximately five hours of endurance in city traffic, or a range of about 110km.
Recharging is via a normal wall socket, with the 125 volt set-up taking two hours to achieve an 80 per cent recharge.
The 27 horsepower machine weighs 198kg dry and comes with a two-year warranty.
It comes equipped with Bluetooth communication.
The company claims the scooter will cost a little more than a conventional 250 maxi but, because of the low servicing requirements, will be cheaper to own over time.
Vectrix Australia CEO Charles Mann has been working on setting up a dealer network, and recently told Australian Motorcycle News, "We're looking at a plug and go purchase deal, like buying a mobile phone." The company is also hoping for some tax or price relief for its products, given their environmentally-friendly credentials.
Future plans include a light scooter, a three-wheeled version (like the Piaggio MP3) plus a small sports bike. See www.vectrixusa.com.
