EICMA: Honda V4 Crosstourer Concept

Honda gives us a sneak peak at its next-gen big-bore adventure tourer, the VFR1200-powered V4 Crosstourer Concept

In addition to the production-ready Crossrunner, Honda also chose Italy’s EICMA show to present its take on the next generation of large-capacity adventure

tourers, the V4 Crosstourer Concept. As the name suggests, it’s only a concept bike for now, but Big Red has obviously put a significant amount of effort

into taking the V4 powerplant and Dual Clutch Transmission currently found in its VFR1200F sportstourer, and creating a machine that’s plainly gunning for

models such as BMW’s R 1200 GS and Yamaha's XTZ1200 Super Tenere.

Honda’s current big-bore adventure tourer is the XL1000V Varadero – a bike powered by the competent but ageing V-twin first seen in the VTR1000 Firestorm.

The current Varadero has remained essentially unchanged since its last major revision some seven years ago, so a replacement model is well and truly due. “The

V4 Crosstourer Concept will utilise the same powerplant as the VFR1200 to bring the benefits of this world-beating engine to a new type of customer,” says Honda.

“This will be the first time an adventure tourer has been fitted with a compacy and powerful V4 engine,” it adds.

The concept bike sticks faithfully to the modern adventure tourer theme - long-travel suspension, upright ride position, good luggage carrying ability and

spoked wheels - but stands apart with its engine format and Dual Clutch Transmission, the latter effectively giving the market its first auto 'go anywhere' all-rounder.

Largely pioneered in recent years by BMW and its GS series of bikes, the adventure tourer market is proving an increasingly lucrative target. The

V4 Crosstourer Concept looks set to capitalise on this trend, and – together with the Crossrunner, also unveiled at EICMA – places further emphasis on the expansion of Honda’s V4-powered range.
