Honda’s booth at the 2024 EICMA motorcycle show included a couple of electric concepts, but what really caught the eye was a V-three engine lurking in a rolling chassis.
Honda’s no stranger to V3 engines – it’s manufactured them in production and racing guise, with Freddie Spencer winning the 1983 500GP title on one – but here’s a first: a V3 with an electrical compressor which works in a turbo-like way.
However, instead of repurposing exhaust gases, the compressor is mobilised to feed the 75-degree, water-cooled V3.
Honda says the advantage of the design is that torque can be delivered even from very low rpm, and it’s extremely compact allowing a high degree of layout freedom. It also does not require any form of intercooler.
A new way of internal combustion thinking, and Honda says the technology is earmarked for large displacement mass-produced models. And why not?
