EICMA: Honda Crossrunner

Honda breaks new ground with V4-powered streetfighter/adventure tourer hybrid

Among Honda’s numerous EICMA new production model debuts was this striking machine, the Crossrunner. Pitched as a hybrid blend of streetfighter and adventure

tourer, according to Honda the Crossrunner provides “a precisely controlled experience, be it for short urban trips or for covering vast distances.”

The models sees a twin-spar alloy frame wrapped around a 782cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, V4 engine equipped with VTEC – Honda’s variable valve system that sees

the engine shift from two-valve to four-valve operation to favour either economy or performance. That’s right, it’s the faithful, long-serving and proven

powerplant also found in Honda’s VFR800 sportstourer.

Wide handlebars and an easy ride position afford both comfort and control, while the bike rides on a 43mm cartridge fork and a Pro-Link rising rate

monoshock. The Crossrunner is equipped with combined brakes fitted with ABS as standard, while a “floating instrument binnacle”, mounted high, has a digital

LCD speedo, a tacho, an ambient temperature gauge, a clock, a coolant temperature gauge and two trip meters.

Honda says considerable effort has gone into maximising pillion comfort on the Crossrunner, resulting in a low, flat pillion perch for easy mounting and

dismounting, and added protection from the elements. The bike also features a low four-into-two-into-one exhaust system, which Honda says affords a high

level of cornering clearance while enhancing the bike’s distinctive V4 engine note.

While the Crossrunner takes some styling cues from the world of adventure tourers, its specs suggest it’ll call the tarmac home. However, given the VFR1200-

powered V4 Crosstourer Concept model also unveiled at EICMA, the Crossrunner does appear to be at the spearhead of a push to bolster the marque’s V4-powered

range.

Although pricing details are still to be confirmed, the Crossrunner will reach Aussie showrooms in the second half of 2011.
