Five years after it was first launched, Yamaha’s Tenere 700 adventure bike has taken a quantum leap forward with multiple updates focussed on performance, ergonomics and aesthetics.
While mindful of not adding “technology for technology’s sake,” the introduction of a YCC-T electronic throttle on the 690cc parallel-twin is a long overdue addition. It means switchable modes – Sport and Explorer – for the first time on the CP2 platform, while the Tenere 700 also has new 43mm upside-down forks and a revised shock with a remote preload adjuster. Suspension travel is 210mm on the front and 200mm on the rear.
The latest version of the engine also has a shorter intake duct, which Yamaha says contributes to a fatter torque curve lower in the rev range – which is always a welcome feature when riding off-road.
Other refinements include revised gearbox internals for a smoother gear shift, while the clutch actuation position has been moved forward and a protector cover added as to not interfere with the rider's leg.
There are two traction control settings (on-off), while there’s the option of full ABS, partial ABS with the rear wheel deactivated, or ABS turned off. For a faster and more convenient operation, a long press of the dedicated ABS button turns off the anti-lock system and traction control.
To lower the centre of gravity, the 16-litre tank has been repositioned, and a new one-piece rally seat is both long and narrow and offers greater freedom of movement while riding – and also promotes a tighter fit between rider and passenger!
Larger footrests, first seen on the Tenere 700 World Raid, are 10mm wider to help with balance, leverage and weight transfer on loose surfaces.
The Tenere 700 also debuts a new 6.3-inch TFT screen with smartphone connectivity, as well as updated switchgear, and a new headlamp design features four LED light units stacked in an aluminium casing.
Colour-matched handguards complete the Tenere 700 package, while colours are Frozen Titanium, Icon Blue and Sky Blue.
