EICMA 2021: Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, Fireblade SP

Minor engine and electronics tweaks plus a heritage SP livery announced as the Fireblade turns 30

Honda is marking the Fireblade’s 30th anniversary with some engine updates aimed at improving racetrack rideability, some minor tweaks to electronics as well as a tribute paint scheme for the up-spec SP version.

The CBR1000RR-R SP will be offered in a limited-edition heritage livery, in homage to the original 'Blade of 1992

While the chassis and bodywork remain unchanged for the 2022 model year, small but significant tweaks to the engine, including an altered airbox and intake funnels, are said to make the available performance easier to harness, especially through corner apexes and exits.

Despite the changes, performance figures remain virtually unchanged at 214hp at 14,500rpm and 112Nm at 12,500rpm, with the acceleration improvements achieved by adding three teeth to the rear sprocket, which in turn increases the wheelbase ever so slightly to 1460mm.

The traction control system – what the Japanese firm calls Honda Selectable Torque Control – has been refined accordingly, as has the quickshifter, while the surface of the pistons within the Nissin brake calipers have been addressed to improve braking consistency over race distances.

The top-spec SP version – currently the only version available in Aussie dealerships – will be offered in a limited-edition 30th Anniversary livery that pays tribute the iconic 1992 CBR900RR Fireblade with its now-legendary brushstroke-style paint, alongside its traditional red/blue scheme (below).
