2019 is going to be a massive year in the middleweight adventure market, with KTM the latest manufacturer to announce it's officially adding to the pie with the 790 Adventure and more off-road-focussed 790 Adventure R.
Both machines are powered by the 95hp/88Nm LC8c parallel twin engine that first appeared in the 790 Duke – and which is again used as a stressed member for the chassis – and also feature WP suspension and spoked wheels: a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear. The 790 Adventure has Avon Trailrider tyres and the R Metzeler Karoo 3 hoops.
Their expected arrival date in Australia is June 2019.
The new KTMs have five-inch colour TFT screens, lean-angle sensitive traction control and cornering ABS, and options include cruise control and a bi-directional quickshifter. There is also an offroad ABS setting which disengages the technology on the rear.
The 790 Adventure has three riding modes – Street, Offroad and Rain – with Rally an option. All four are standard on the R.
The 790 Adventure has 200mm of suspension travel, and the 790 Adventure R 240mm.
KTM claims up to 450km of action from the 20-litre fuel tank, with the main volume placed as low as possible to concentrate mass around the centre point.
The ergonomics are designed so that the slim upper part of the tank gives a narrow knee area when standing up, which KTM says offers greater levels of control when riding off road.
Both bikes weigh in at a claimed 189kg (dry).
We’ll have pricing details on the 790 Adventure and 790 Adventure R as they come to hand.
