EICMA 2017: Indian FTR1200 Custom

Scout engine in a flat track chassis

Indian has taken all before it in the 2017 American flat track scene with its Harley-Davidson-busting FTR750, so the appearance of the street-legal FTR1200 Custom at this year’s EICMA motorcycle show in Milan created plenty of interest.

The FTR1200 uses the 1133cc Scout engine fitted inside the FTR750 chrome-moly frame, so there’s plenty of performance in that cocktail. And Indian’s all about “a bold future driven by innovation and success”, so a flat-track ready production machine could fit nicely into that thinking.

The question of FTR1200 production plans was put to local Indian boss Peter Harvey at the recent Scout Bobber launch, but his only response was that – while agreeing it’s a superb-looking machine – no communication had come from the Minnesota-based company to suggest it was on the cards. That doesn’t mean it won’t become a reality one day…

And the other thing is that Indian is calling the FTR1200 a custom – or could it be a concept, which is traditionally step one in making it to full production.

The FTR1200 weighs about 193kg, well below the Scout and Scout Bobber, and it has trick wheels, exhaust and carbon fibre body work. There are Brembo brakes, Ohlins suspension and LED lights.

One for the wish list, hey? Or maybe we’ll settle for a production version of the FTR750 first, and a LAMS version as well...
