Just two weeks after Honda unveiled its updated Gold Wing Tour, BMW has whipped the covers off an all-new luxury tourer called the K 1600 Grand America.
Based on the capable K 1600 GT platform, the Grand America uses the same lower subframe as the firm’s K 1600 B bagger and adds a large top box with an integrated passenger backrest to create a tech-laden long distance tourer.
It’s powered by the firm’s 1600cc inline six-cylinder engine which is capable of 160hp of power and a significant 175Nm of torque and is matched to six-speed gearbox (seven, if you include its reverse gear) actuated by BMW’s Shift Assistant Pro quickshifter.
Other electronic rider aids include a two-mode selectable electronic suspension (cruise or road) fitted to the firm’s signature Duolever and Paralever arrangements, there’s three-way switchable engine modes (dynamic, road and rain), as well as cruise control, traction control and ABS.
Both the rider and pillion get heated seats as well as heated grips, there’s an electrically adjustable windshield, a stereo and a list of optional accessories as long as your arm including navigation, adaptive lights, hill start control and central locking.
BMW Australia often tailors its models to suit the Australian market’s unique needs and is yet to announce specific specification, price or availability.
