BWM Motorrad’s S 1000 R nakedbike is officially a goer, packing a 160hp punch into a 207kg kerb weight. The bike also has Race ABS, traction control and two riding modes as standard.
It will be seen in Australia for the first time at the 2013 Sydney Motorcycle & Scooter Show from November 15-17, and go on sale locally in about April, 2014.
As expected, BMW trimmed the S 1000 RR’s searing top end in S 1000 R guise, and the new roadster reaches maximum power at 11,000rpm. Peak torque from the in-line four-cylinder engine is 112Nm at 9250rpm – approximately 10Nm more than the S 1000 RR. The punchier engine has been achieved by using redesigned cylinder head ducts, and modifying the cam profiles and engine management. The new BMS-X engine management system also supports an E-Gas "throttle-by-wire" system.
The S 1000 R comes with two riding modes – Rain and Road -- and ASC (Automatic Stability Control) as standard. The riding modes apply different levels of Race ABS and ASC intervention.
Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), incorporating a further two riding modes -- "Dynamic" and "Dynamic Pro" -- is available as an ex-works option. This option allows riders to make the most of the S 1000 R's sporty performance potential both on the road and on the race track.
The S 1000 RR uses an aluminium alloy perimeter frame, in which the engine forms part of the load-bearing structure. As on the RR, an adjustable upside-down fork and a dual swingarm with adjustable central spring strut guide the wheels front and rear.
Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) is available as an ex-works optional extra, and offers the benefits of electronic damping control. For further enhanced performance, in combination with enhanced active safety, this system dynamically adapts the damping to the current riding situation with split-second speed.
Local price and availability should be available soon from BMW Motorrad Australia.
