BMW Motorrad has given its long-serving R 1200 RT tourer a spruce-up, which includes the adoption of the company’s 1170cc air and liquid cooled Boxer engine which is found in the R 1200 GS adventure bike.
It will go on sale in Australia in about April, 2014.
The engine produces a peak output of 125 hp (92kW) at 7750 rpm and maximum torque of 125Nm (92 lb-ft) at 6500rpm. The centrifugal mass of both the crankshaft and the alternator have been increased for smoother engine running.
There are two standard riding modes – Rain and Road – with an optional and more sporting riding mode called Dynamic -- which also includes a Hill
Star Control function.
Gear Shift Assistant Pro is available as an option ex-works, and allows upshifts and downshifts without operation of the clutch or throttle.
Semi-active electronic suspension adjustment is also available ex-works.
The ergonomic triangle formed by the handlebars, seat and footrests has been lowered by 20mm to make it even easier to reach the ground, something which shorter riders and passengers especially will appreciate.
The windshield has been updated, while the headlight assembly is based on the design featured on the K 1600 models. An LED daytime running light can be fitted as an ex-works option.
The instrument cluster has undergone a complete makeover, with the new R 1200 RT now featuring a large 5.7-inch TFT colour display to provide the rider with an even greater wealth of data. And for the ultimate in touring comfort, the list of available factory-fitted options includes an audio system with innovative operation via the multi-controller.
There are three new colour compositions: Quartz blue metallic and Callisto grey metallic matt are combined with the contrasting colour Dark slate metallic matt, while the Ebony metallic finish forms an eye-catching contrast with Monolith metallic matt.
