When Harley-Davidson shut down its sports bike brand, Buell, it was assumed that the company would be dead and buried. But as Erik Buell continues to support race teams under the EBR (Erik Buell Racing) banner, it seems yet another street-legal Buell spin-off model has been created.
We reported on the EBR (Erik Buell Racing) 1190RS sports bike back in September, a promising 1200cc V-twin sporty which will be unveiled after EBR's non-competitive contract with Harley-Davidson ends, possibly around February 2011, and now another race team has designed its own production bike based on the Buell race machines.
The German-based Pegasus Race Team were given the thumbs-up by Erik Buell himself to create a streetfighter concept bike based on the EBR 1190RR race bike that Pegasus has been fielding in Europe, and the result is the EBR 1190 Typhon.
"EBR is working intensely right now on getting the new 1190RS Superbike model ready for production, which is consuming all our resources," said Erik Buell.
"We had been talking with our friends at Pegasus about our plans for a streetfighter model that would follow the 1190RS, and mentioning we could not work on it at this time, Pegasus asked if they could build a concept model to show, so we sent many CAD models over for them and our friends at Gruner to use to speed up the design process. They did a great job in a very short time!" added Mr Buell.
As the only race team outside of America to still race Buells (and the team has had an excellent season with several podiums), Pegasus Race Team has created an appealing new model that takes design inspiration from Buell and perhaps a little bit of BMW too. It is a German creation after all...
"Our idea was with our years of experience in Buell racing to concept the ultimate Streetfighter with outstanding performance and a unique design," said Team Manager Jens Krüper, and already there is a groundswell of support for the concept model.
The 185hp naked bike would no doubt be a real weapon, in a straight line and through a corner, and if Pegasus Race Team gets enough interest it will consider fabricating more parts and selling them as aftermarket accessories for Buell XB and 1125R/CR bikes. And who knows, maybe Erik Buell will buy the design from them his second EBR model?
