One of the motorcycles used in the iconic counterculture film Easy Rider is set to go under the hammer, with an astronomical price tag expected.
Offered as part of the upcoming Propstore auction, the bike – nicknamed Captain America – was ridden by Peter Fonda’s character Wyatt in the film. The machine is powered by a Harley-Davidson Panhead overhead-valve engine and is painted in American flag colours.
Captain America features in the final scene, when Wyatt and Billy (played by Dennis Hopper) are attacked by a gang, after which Wyatt crashes the bike. Now restored, the Captain America H-D is expected to fetch anywhere between $200,000 and $400,000 USD.

Originally designed by Cliff Vaughs and Ben Hardy, the Captain America bike is one of two versions built for the film. One was stolen from stuntman Tex Hall’s home, but the other was gifted to Dan Haggerty, who helped maintain the bikes during production of the film.
Haggerty restored the bike and had Fonda sign it for authenticity in 2003. He sold it to a collector in 2002, and then it was displayed at the National Motorcycle Museum in Iowa from 2002 to 2013.

A replica bike was built by Haggerty in 1994, but an extensive review revealed it was not consistent with the modifications made to the on-screen examples. So it is understood that the motorcycle being offered in the Propstore auction is the last remaining Captain America bike. Registrations for the auction are now open at propstoreauction.com.
