Gizmag.com has produced a brilliant preview of the upcoming E.J. Cole Collection Auction in Las Vegas on March 20-21, with the 220-bike catalogue showcasing some of the best examples of American motorcycle history going under the hammer – one which could run tectonic plates through the collectible motorcycle marketplace.
According to estimates, some of the bikes may sell for over $1,000,000, five for more than $300,000 and more than 100 should fetch $70,000 or more. This auction will redefine the collectible motorcycle marketplace.
One of the bikes tipped to pass the million dollar mark is one of the three Harley-Davidson Strap Tank Singles in the collection – the other two are reproductions. The strap single is Harley-Davidson's first bike, a 440cc single with Nickel-plated steel straps attaching the oil and main fuel tank to the frame. Its serial number suggests it was the 37th bike made in 1907, making it the 94th Harley-Davidson overall. It has original paint and is onto just its third owner.
Other bikes tipped to make a fuss include the Ex-Steve-McQueen 1915 Cyclone Board Track Racer ($650-000-$750,000) and a 1911 Flying Merkel Twin Racer ($350,000-$400,000).
Only 27 motorcycles have sold for more than $300,000 at auction. The Cole Collection contains five motorcycles which the auctioneer Mecum Midamerica estimates will sell for at least that amount.
Other American marquees at the auction will include American, Armac, Crouch, Detroit, Eagle, Emblem, Erie, Flanders, Geer, Imperial, Merkel-Light, Militaire, Peerless, Racycle, Rambler-Thor, Reading Standard, Theim, Thor, Thoroughbred, Wagner and Yale.
