Suzuki's Ryan Dungey has produced yet another powerhouse performance in the 2009 AMA Supercross Championship, this time by winning the third round in Anaheim last Saturday.
After a slow start in the 20-lap final, Dungey then rallied and began picking off riders with ease, eventually overtaking Josh Hill to move into the top spot on lap 14.
With most of the heavy work out of the road, Dungey then dug in his heels until the end, eventually winning by 3.139secs, with Hill's factory Yamaha teammate and defending champion James Stewart in third.
Australia's lone hand, Yamaha-mounted Michael Byrne, deputising for the injured Josh Grant, was ninth, with Chad Reed (Kawasaki) absent after breaking a bone in his hand in round two.
Dan Reardon (Yamaha) and Matt Moss (Suzuki) are also currently indisposed with injury.
But the man of the moment is Dungey, who has already turned the 20010 championship inside-out with his speed and guile - and snapped the Reed-Stewart power-sharing arrangement of recent years.
"It was a fun race, and we all raced clean," said Dungey. "I was able to see what lines were working out there, so I learned through the race. I tried to be patient out there tonight. Racing 20 laps is a long time, so you have to be smart.
"Ryan and Josh were riding awesome tonight, and I am happy to come out of here with a decent finish," said Stewart. "I try my best, and that is all I can do. I always give it 100 percent."
Honda pair Andrew Short and Kevin Windham were fourth and fifth in Anaheim.
Dungey leads the 17-round title with 72pts out of a possible 75, ahead of deadlocked duo Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) and Short on 52pts. Then it's Stewart and Windham on 51pts apiece.
Byrne (18pts) is in 15th and Reed (4pts) - who is set to miss another 4-5 weeks of racing - is languishing in 24th.
Meanwhile, Jake Weimer (Kawasaki) won his third consecutive west coast lites race, leading all 15 laps of the main event to prevail from Honda brand-mates Wil Hahn and Trey Canard.
