Ducati rider Carlin Dunne dominated the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in early August, setting a new course record for motorcycles on his Multistrada 1200 S. The win marks Ducati’s third-straight victory at the historic "Race to the Clouds".
Both Dunne and Ducati teammate and six-time winner Greg Tracy finished the race under the 10-minute barrier, which is a first for motorcycles in the event’s 90-year history. Dunne crossed the finish line at the 4300m summit of Pikes Peak in nine minutes, 52 seconds (9:52), beating his previous record of 11:11, while Tracy finished on 9:58.
The 20km course has 156 turns, ranging from hairpin, blind, decreasing radius, and multi-apex. The start line altitude is 2862m and finishes at 4300m.
“Today was an emotional day,” said Dunne. “When we heard that we won and broke the record for the second time, I was speechless.”
Ducati also finished in third and fourth, thanks to Bruno Langlois and Eddie Tafoya respectively, while Harley-Davidson rider Michael Henao was fifth.
