Ducati unleashes wild new Panigale V4 R for 2023

The spectacular new 2023 Ducati Panigale V4 R is capable of 240hp, but it won't come cheap

The new 2023 Ducati Panigale V4 R has been revealed with updates that bring it closer than ever to the Italian firm’s MotoGP machines. It is the first update to the R model since 2021 and it follows a recent update to the base Panigale V4.

With more power, agility, and intelligence, the new range-topping Panigale V4 R won’t come cheap, with an eye-watering price tag of $70,200 ride away. A close look at the 2023 revisions, however, and the price makes a bit more sense.

The updated R model is powered by a new 998cc Desmosedici Stradale R engine that puts out whopping 240.5hp at 15,500rpm in track configuration and revs to 16,500rpm in sixth gear.

In its road-legal trim, however, which is restricted by Euro-5 homologation, the V4 R is still capable of 218hp at 15,500rpm. A special racing exhaust is needed to unlock the full power potential.

As well as the updated engine, Ducati has also worked with Shell to develop a special oil that apparently guarantees a 10% reduction in mechanical friction and leads to an increase in maximum performance. The oil is based on racing additives that are specific for high-rpm engines equipped with a dry clutch – such is the case with MotoGP and WSBK engines.

The new V4 R’s exclusive nature is boosted by carbon wings, a MotoGP-inspired livery, and the model name and number shown on the billet aluminium steering.

The machine will be produced in a numbered series

Elsewhere, the Panigale V4R includes gun-drilled titanium connecting rods – which Ducati says is a first for a road bike – and DLC (diamond-like carbon) coated pistons, similar to the solution used in MotoGP and Formula 1.

Other changes include a more aggressive profile of the intake cams, lengthening of first, second, and sixth gears, and a new dry clutch derived from WorldSBK.

The V4 R also adopts the electronic updates introduced on the 2022 and 2023 Panigale V4, including updated power modes, a new Track Evo display, engine maps calibrated for each single gear, refinements to traction control and ride-by-wire, and the adoption of the Engine Brake Control EVO 2 strategy. There are also track-specific electronic functions designed especially for the V4 R.

Ducati has also brought the V4 R chassis and suspension in line with the current Panigale V4 model, with high-spec Ohlins suspension that features vast adjustability. The bodywork has also been updated, with an increased fuel capacity of 17-litres, and a revised aerodynamic package.

The new Ducati Panigale V4 R is expected to be available on Australian shores in May 2023. Head to the Ducati website for more information on the new V4 R.
