With production of the new Ducati Multistrada V4 underway, the Italian firm has revealed the V4 Granturismo engine that will power the adventure machine. The new details come ahead of the bike's full reveal on November 4.
The V4 Granturismo is an 1158cc 4-cylinder 90 degree V engine that puts out 170hp at 10,500rpm and 125Nm at 8750rpm.

Ducati describes the V4 Granturismo as an ‘extremely compact, lightweight, high-performance, and torque-rich engine’ that is designed specifically for adventure touring.
Reliability and durability were both integral for the development of the new engine, with Ducati claiming record-breaking maintenance intervals for a motorcycle engine. According to the Bolonga-based company, the Granturismo V4 has a maintenance interval of 60,000km. The large intervals are thanks in part to a spring valve return system which places less stress on the components.
The new power plant weighs just 66.7kg, which is 1.2kg lighter than the Testastretta twin-cylinder engine that powers the current Multistrada 1260. It is more compact too – 85mm shorter, 95mm lower and only 20mm wider than the previous engine.
Keeping in line with Ducati’s sports heritage, the V4 Granturismo also benefits from the brand's racing experience. This includes the decision to adopt a counter-rotating crankshaft, which improves handling and agility.
To prevent the uncomfortable heat transmissions that is common with four-cylinder engines, the V4 Granturismo deactivates the rear cylinder bank at idle. When the bike is stationary, the combustion process in these cylinders is halted, improving rider comfort and reducing fuel consumption.
The new Ducati Multistrada V4 will be revealed in full on November 4. The Italian brand has already confirmed the use of radar technology for the first time on a production motorcycle.
