Ducati heritage to headline WDW

The 2012 version of World Ducati Week will pay homage to the company's phenomenal success with its L-twin race bikes, including the 1972 Imola 200
Ducati is preparing to mark the 40th anniversary of Paul Smart’s 1972 victory in the Imola 200, a race which literally kick-started the company’s participation in production-based road racing with the 90-degree L-twin engine and Desmodromic valve control.
Central to the celebrations will be a ‘Ducati Vintage Contest’ and special display dedicated to the historic at World Ducati Week (WDW), which will be held at Misano from June 21-24 with Smart in attendance.
WDW will retrace the events which that led engineer Fabio Taglioni to produce the original race bike design based on the 750GT road machine and its arrival on the starting grid at Imola with Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari.
Since then, the roll call of success with the L-twin/Desmo script also includes Mike Hailwood’s victory in the 1978 Isle of Man TT and, from 1988 onwards, Ducati’s World Superbike supremacy which has seen it win 14 rider titles, the last with Carlos Checa in 2011.
