Italian marque Ducati is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and as part of the festivities the manufacturer is sending seven fortunate Ducati fans around the globe on a Multistrada 1200.
The 'Globetrotter 90th round-the-world' epic kicked off at the recent World Ducati Week 2016 at the Misano Circuit, Rimini, before the Multistrada in question was ridden to the official start point at the Ducati factory and headquarters at Bologna.
There Indian motorcyclist Vir Nakai set out on July 4 to ride to Moscow, Russia, also ferrying a symbolic 'torch' crafted by the Ducati Design Centre to signify the passion of Ducatisti around the world.
Vir was one of seven people selected by Ducati from the more than 3000 entries to secure a spot on the historic circumnavigation. Making the cut was no mean feat; first the 3000-odd web entries were whittled down to 14 based on the applicants' long-distance travel experience, editorial and photographic ability, and spirit of adventure. The 14 then had to attend a riding 'bootcamp', where they were assessed for riding and basic mechanical techniques.
At the end of the process seven lucky individuals stood ready to play their part in the 30,000km journey, each sharing a leg. The seven included Australian Steve Fraser – a 50-year-old from Perth who will tackle the Trans-Siberian section of the journey.
The stages and 'Globetrotters' for the trip are as follows:
1. Bologna to Moscow: Vir Nakai (37, India)
2. Trans-Siberia: Steve Fraser (50, Australia)
3. Japan: Jessica Leyne (27, Belgium)
4. San Francisco to Indianapolis: Eduardo Generali (28, Brazil)
5. Indianapolis to Lisbon: Samuel Bendall (31, USA)
6. Lisbon to Isle of Man: Hugo Wilson (54, UK)
7. Isle of Man to Bologna: Timo Schafer (30, Germany)
