Despite its popularity, Ducati Australia has confirmed it has officially dropped the learner-approved Monster 659 from its line-up, making the retro-styled Scrambler Sixty2 the brand’s sole LAMS offering. The learner-approved Monster was introduced in 2011 as an Australia-only model after Ducati Australia convinced the factory it needed a Bologna-built bike for the lucrative learner-approved market. Positioned at the pointy end of the category’s pricing structure, it was a regular in the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industry’s annual top 10 sales figures, in fact the 659cc Monster was the fifth highest-selling naked bike of 2015 with 322 new units changing hands during the 12-month period. It just edged out KTM’s 390 Duke by one unit despite its $12,990 price tag being twice that of the capable Austrian’s $6095 price. The scratching leaves the 399cc learner-approved variant of the brand’s successful Ducati Scrambler as the firm’s sole LAMS-approved model. It’s 260cc smaller, has 8kW less punch and is $1000 less expensive. Here’s hoping every learner rider interested in a Ducati is a hipster.
