As if he hasn't already got enough on his plate. Triumph-riding former federal opposition leader and AMA boss Dr Brendan Nelson, a passionate advocate for motorcycle safety, is now going it alone and founding his own political party in his home state of NSW.
And Australia's current ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as our special representative at the World Health Organisation and NATO, already has a working title for his new undertaking: Party Against Motorcycle Cruelty (PAMC).
When contacted by the Bikesales Network, Dr Nelson was disappointed that his plans had been leaked into the public domain, and he refused to make further comment on the matter until he released an official statement at 5.00pm (EST) today.
After that, we should know Dr Nelson's long-term vision for PAMC, including a likely deputy leader (it's safe to say it's not going to be Malcolm Turnbull) and his plans to field candidates in the next NSW state election.
Dr Nelson regularly lends his support to a number of two-wheel road safety programs, catering from primary school children all the way to defence force personnel.
"I wish I had the chance to learn what these students are learning when I was younger," Dr Nelson said. "I got my first motorbike at the age of 17 and often wonder if that's why my mother's hair turned grey so early.
"Road safety is one of the most vital lessons students can learn at school. Unfortunately, many road accidents are preventable. Educating young drivers is the first step to helping reduce the road toll."
