Doyle wins speedway opener

And takes an early lead in the 2015 Australian Speedway Championship as defending champion Chris Holder struggles with equipment problems
Jason Doyle exorcised his Gillman ghost after winning the opening round of the Australian Speedway Championship on Saturday, January 3.
The Newcastle-born racer topped the heat scores on 14pts alongside Rohan Tungate, before winning the A Final ahead of B Final winner Justin Sedgmen, Tungate and Dakota North.
This was a sweet victory for Doyle after he crashed two laps from the A Final chequered flag to lose what would have been his first Aussie title at the Adelaide venue last year.
Defending champion Chris Holder scraped into the B Final on 8pts after managing just five in his opening four rides as he struggled with equipment problems.
But he was unable to make the last four and now has a mountain to climb to regain his title, trailing Doyle by 9pts.
A change in the rules for 2015 has points scored in the 20 heat races and A Final counting towards a rider’s championship total, meaning Doyle ended his night with a near-perfect 17.
Only Poole signing Dakota North got the better of Doyle when they met in their opening race, heat two.
Tungate went unbeaten in his opening four races, before Doyle defeated him in race 19 to top the score chart on countback and snatch first choice of gates for the A Final.
North joined them in progressing straight through to the last four on 13pts, while Sedgmen and Josh Grajczonek tied on 11 to earn spots in the B Final along with Holder and Max Fricke, who tallied 10.
Holder endured a difficult night by his very high standards, recording two seconds, a third and a last in his opening rides, before rescuing a B Final place with a win over Kieran Sproule, Brodie Waters and Joey Ringwood in heat 18.
Round two is in Mildura on Monday, January 5.
