Donington kings: Sykes and Rea share wins
Team Green did the job, as the whole paddock paid its respects to the late Nicky HaydenKawasaki factory pairing Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea have won the two world superbike races at Donington in England, the scene of round six from May 26-28.
Tom Sykes took a brilliant win in a dramatic race one from wildcard Leon Haslam (Kawasaki) and Alex Lowes (Yamaha), with Rea and Chaz Davies (Ducati) both crashing – Davies managing to pick his bike up ad finish in eighth place. Meanwhile, Rea suffered a high-speed accident at turn three, but was soon back on his feet and on his way back to the pits.
It was Sykes' ninth consecutive win at Donington, but Rea snapped that streak the day after with a superb win in race two ahead of his teammate and Davies, who passed Michael van der Mark (Yamaha) in the final stages.
Sykes was among the first to congratulate Rea on his triumph, which also doubled as Kawasaki’s 100th race win in WorldSBK. Rea also dedicated his win to the late Nicky Hayden, who tragically passed away earlier in the week after a cycling accident in Italy.
Marco Melandri (Ducati) and van der Mark completed the top five in race one, and in race two Lowes was fifth.
Rea is now on 260pts, ahead of Sykes (205) and Davies (185).
World supersport
Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki) made another big statement of intent by taking a third win in three races. He was joined on the podium at Donington by series leader Lucas Mahias (Yamaha) and Jules Cluzel (Honda).
Aussie Anthony West (Yamaha) was seventh, while his countryman Lachlan Epis (Kawasaki) and Giuseppe Scarcella (Honda) were 23rd and 27th.
