Disappointment of the year

The demise of Husqvarna's Nuda, Terra and Strada models wasn't entirely unexpected when it fell under the ownership of KTM, but it was still a shame

The Poms failing to make a better fist of the their Ashes defence. In the two-wheel landscape, motorcycle dealerships continuing to fall by the wayside here, there and everywhere. The climate is tough and margins are tight, which leaves precious little wriggle room unless you can offer a premium service -- and therein may lie the problem for a number of dealers. Also, Victoria produced a pearler of a parliamentary motorcycle safety enquiry in late 2012, but this year other governments departments/statutory authorities have been shooting from the hip on areas that were discredited in the report, such as front number plates.

Australia’s 2012 World Speedway Champion, Chris Holder, getting sidelined through injury only just after his title defence had begun. He’s making his return to competition at the Australian Speedway Championship in January – let’s hope that paves the way to future world championship success. Also Husqvarna’s Nuda 900/900R and TR 650 Terra/Strada models. While KTM’s purchase of Husqvarna is undoubtedly good for the brand, it was a real shame to see the rug pulled out from under Husky’s new road and adventure models – and indeed Australia’s former Husqvarna importer, Paul Feeney Group.

Plenty of quality racers out there riding for next to nothing, or walking away from the sport. It’s rich at the top but it seems more than ever that the money runs out pretty quick after that. Unless you’re Spanish, it seems. Or Rossi…
