World championship leader Mike Di Meglio (Derbi) is a man for all seasons, as he proved in this afternoon’s opening 125cc qualifying session at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.
On a wet Phillip Island circuit, Di Meglio again set the fastest time, just as he did in this morning’s opening practice session on a dry layout.
While Di Meglio again led the way to move into provisional pole position, the inclement conditions saw a number of unheralded riders come to the fore, including Aprilia duo Danny Webb and Michael Ranseder, who were second and third.
Stefan Bradl (Aprilia) was fourth, ahead of KTM’s Esteve Rabat.
Only one of the Australian wildcards, Blake Leigh-Smith (Honda), set a time within the 110 percent qualifying cutoff, but there is another session tomorrow for the other locals to make their move.
