Mick Doohan has confirmed a documentary about his life and times, which will include a heavy emphasis on his nearly career-ending 1992 crash at Assen, will go ahead. It will be filmed by his Hollywood mate Johnny Depp.
News of the collaboration between the two first surfaced in September last year after Depp and his wife Amber Heard set up camp in Doohan's sprawling Gold Coast mansion while he was filming Pirates Of The Caribbean 5.
Over five months the pair, just one year apart in age, became firm friends and that's where the seed for the documentary was planted. Now Doohan, speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin, where he was one of the judges, says the documentary will be a goer.
Doohan's 160km/h-plus crash at Assen saw him break his leg, but it wasn’t a straightforward recovery — complications and questionable medical advice from the Dutch doctors saw his leg deteriorate rapidly.
He nearly lost the pin, but thanks to intervention by the legendary Dr Costa it was saved. Doohan missed four rounds after the crash and ended losing the tile to American Wayne Rainey.
The next year, Honda developed a thumb-operated rear brake as Doohan's right leg was still in a bad way.
Doohan won the first of his first consecutive 500 GP titles in 1994 and, after a crash at Jerez in 1999, didn't race competitively again.
A date hasn't yet been set for the start of production. Will Boo and Pistol make cameos?
