Davies wins, Sykes closes on Rea

Action aplenty in the opening world superbike race of the weekend in Germany, with Davies dominant and world champion Rea crashing

Aruba.it Racing – Ducati’s Chaz Davies was peerless in the opening race at round 10 of the 2016 Superbike World Championship in Germany on September 17.

Davies defeated Kawasaki Racing Team’s Tom Sykes by just over 10 seconds in the 21-lapper at Lausitzring, followed home in third by Honda World Superbike Team’s Nicky Hayden.

Davies' dominant victory now makes him the third rider in WorldSBK history to win with three different manufacturers in the same country. He previously won in Nurburgring with BMW and Aprilia and can now cross the Lausitzring off the list on a Ducati.

“After such a long break, I was a bit apprehensive before our first race, but today everything worked out perfectly since Superpole," said Davies. "The two tests done during the summer proved to be crucial, because we found once again the feeling I had missed in a few races this year.

"Thanks to my team and Ducati, we now have a package that I feel ‘mine’ again. I was confident about my pace, but honestly I’m surprised with the gap. It’s not impossible to cut our deficit in the championship, we saw that everyone can make mistakes so we’ll try to win as many races as we can until the end of the season, without worrying too much about the standings.”

Meanwhile, reigning world champion Jonathan Rea crashed out on lap eight – his second successive DNF – and he's now just 26pts ahead of his teammate Sykes in the championship with seven races still remaining.

Aprilia fast man Lorenzo Savadori was another to crash out, while local fast man Markus Reiterberger (Althea BMW) retired with technical problems.

Althea BMW's Jordi Torres came home in fourth from Leon Camier (MV Agusta Reparto Corse), Michael van der Mark (Honda World Superbike Team), Davies’ teammate Davide Giugliano and Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team’s Alex Lowes.

Lowes’ teammate Sylvain Guintoli gave a solid performance in his first race back from injury, leading Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team) and Aussie Anthony West (Pedercini Racing) home to ninth position.

The second Aussie, Josh Brookes (Milwaukee BMW), finished in 14th position.
