Davies and Rea take the Laguna honours

The 2017 WorldSBK title hit the legendary circuit in Monterey, California, and it was the old firm of Rea, Davies and Sykes who took the top spots

The 2017 Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) headed to the US from July 7-9 for round eight at Laguna Seca, which saw Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) and reigning world champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) take the two wins.

Davies scored 1-3 results over the weekend, Rea went 2-1 and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) was third in race one and second in the finale as the championship top three again dominated proceedings.

Davies put his back and thumb injuries from round seven firmly behind him in the 25-lap race one, and celebrated the win by holding up a number 69 flag in tribute to the late Nicky Hayden.

The Ducati rider’s final winning margin over Rea was 1.2 seconds, with Sykes a further 4.596 seconds behind his Northern Irish colleague in third place. Marco Melandri (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) crossed the line in fourth, with Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team Ducati) close behind him in fifth.

Leon Camier (MV Agusta Reparto Corse), Jordi Torres (Althea BMW Racing Team), Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team), Leandro Mercado (IodaRacing) and Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia) completed the top 10.

It was not a great day for Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) or Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia) as they both crashed out.

In race two, Rea bounced back to his best to take a dominant victory from Sykes and Davies. It was the Northern Irishman’s second win at the American venue, and he also dedicated the victory to Hayden.

Melandri and Fores (BARNI Racing Team) were again fourth and fifth, ahead of Laverty, Leandro Mercado (IodaRacing Aprilia), Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia), Lowes and Michael van der Mark.

Riders will return to action in Germany from August 18-20, with Rea a clear leader on 341pts from Sykes (282), Davies (226), Melandri (189) and Lowes (148).
