Australian speedway star Darcy Ward has faced a British court on a sexual assault charge.
Ward, 19, faces allegations of assaulting a Coventry teenager at a motel in Dorset between August 16 and 19, 2011. A 17-year-old, believed to be a countryman of Ward’s, also appeared before the magistrate charged with three counts of sexual assault and rape in connection with the incident.
The pair was bailed to appear back in court next week.
A statement has been released by Ward’s British speedway team, Poole Pirates. It read: "We are aware of the situation regarding one of (our) assets and have taken steps to ensure that the rider is represented legally with the best possible advice.
“The club will always remain transparent and will help with any inquiries from the police should they arise.
“However, we would ask the public not to jump to conclusions and allow the legal system to take its course.”
Ward helped Poole Pirates to this year's Elite League title in the UK, and in 2012 he has won a spot in the premier Speedway World Championship alongside compatriots Jason Crump and Chris Holder.
He is a multiple Australian and world under 21 speedway champion.
