World speedway identity Steve Brandon and his son Jack will be embarking on a massive 320km walk — about the distance from Melbourne to Albury — later this year to raise money for Aussie speedway rider Darcy Ward, who suffered terrible spinal injuries at a crash in Poland last August.
The duo will set out from Adrian Flux Arena at King’s Lynn on Wednesday, June 29 and aim to arrive at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Friday, July 8, just in time for the British speedway round on July 9.
“King’s Lynn was Darcy’s first home track in British speedway… and the 2014 British SGP at Cardiff was Darcy’s last appearance in the world championship," said Steve.
”When I started thinking about the idea of the #WALK4DARCY and looked on the map, the 200 miles between the two stadiums seemed like a nice number and a suitable challenge to raise money for Darcy.
“We are looking to raise a minimum of £20,000 ($A40,000) for Darcy’s new life, but I hope that by the time we are finished we will have raised more than that. Darcy has 39,000 plus followers on Twitter alone, and if they all donated just one dollar the maths is simple.”
So how can you donate to the #WALK4DARCY project? There will be a page on justgiving.com that will go live on June 4 and remain open for 43 days (Darcy's race number) until July 16.
The #WALK4DARCY website, walk4darcy.com, currently under construction, will also be up and running soon and will keep everyone right up to date with the project.
Ward, a two-time world under 21 champion, was just returning to top form after coming back from suspension for failing an alcohol test at the Latvian round of the world speedway title in 2014 when he crashed heavily on August 23.
After an operation in Poland, he was transferred to England and eventually back to Australia, where the process of intense rehabilitation continues.
