Former Australasian Safari winner Todd Smith has finished a superb seventh in stage seven of the 2017 Dakar Rally in South America.
Smith was the second KTM rider home in the shortened 160km stage in Bolivia, only bested by factory rider Sam Sunderland who continues to lead the rally.
Meanwhile, American Ricky Brabec (Honda) was the stage winner – his first in the event – as he finished ahead of teammate Paulo Goncalves, followed by Sunderland, Joan Barreda (Honda), Xavier De Soultrait (Yamaha), Michael Metge (Honda) and Smith.
Sunderland leads the overall by a massive 17 minutes and 45 seconds (17:45) from Husqvarna's Pablo Quintanilla, followed by Adrian Van Beveren (Yamaha, 22:16), Gerard Farres (KTM, 28:36), Matthias Walkner (KTM, 34:17) and De Soultrait (38:33). Smith is 15th, 1.46:55 behind Sunderland.
Stage eight is over 892km, of which 492km will be timed.
