Dakar Rally stage one cancelled

Bad weather prevented helicopters from flying, which forced the organisers to cancel proceedings

Australia's Toby Price will have to wait another day to get his 2016 Dakar Rally campaign into full swing following the cancellation of the opening stage.

Rain and thunderstorms in Argentina prevented helicopters from flying, which meant the safety of competitors could not be guaranteed. The stage was to be 637km long, including a 227km timed special, from Rosario to Villa Carlos Paz.

Assuming the rally is able to continue on January 4, riders can expect another long day in the saddle. The journey from Villa Carlos Paz to Termas de Río Hondo is 786km including a timed special of 450km. The terrain should present no particular difficulties according to the organisers, who say it should favour those who love riding in the hills at high speed.

The prologue for the rally was held on January 2, with the KTM-backed Price completing the short 11km course 18 seconds behind the winner, Honda's Joan Barreda. Price was third in the 2015 Dakar Rally.
